日本の歴史的ボールストライカー、戸田藤一郎
先日、ひょんなことから
日本最強のプロゴルファー伝
”鬼才・戸田藤一郎の生涯”
を購入し、
あっという間に読みきってしまいました。
私自身は戸田藤一郎さんのゴルフは
見たことはありませんが
うわさでは聞いたことがあり、
どんなゴルファーだったかいつも興味が
ありました。
戸田さんはとても破天荒な人で、
酒・おんな・博打いろんなことに
手を染めました。
しかし、ゴルフをこよなく愛した
昔よくいたタイプのゴルファーみたいです。
幼少時代を神戸で過ごし、
近所につくられた甲南ゴルフ場で
キャディとしてゴルフに出会い、
廣野ゴルフ倶楽部で腕を磨き
日本のゴルフ界創世記に日本を代表して
アメリカに遠征に行き、
最先端のゴルフ技術を学び（盗み）ました。
帰国後は日本で戸田時代をつくり、
ありとあらゆる試合を勝ちながらも、
素行不良でゴルフ界から追放され
10年以上も姿を晦ましていました。
しかし晩年ゴルフ界へ再入会を認められた
彼は全盛期の勢いはないものの、
また多くの試合に勝ち
プロゴルファー戸田藤一郎の存在を
再びアピールしました。
なぜ、彼にそんなに私が惹かれたか
というと、
私のオヤジのように少しアル中で、
将来設計はまったくなし、そして、
いいかっこうしい。
でも、ゴルフに対する愛情はすさまじく
2度目のアメリカ遠征では、
現地での獲得賞金を頼りにし
うまくいかなければ無一文で日本にすら帰れなくなるような
危険をおかしても最先端のゴルフを学びたいという情熱のため
船に揺られ渡米したらしい。
ここでは詳しく書けませんが、
なんともすさまじい一生を送った方です。
本の中に彼のスイング写真が
載っていましたが
すばらしいの一言です。
パンチショットの戸田ーで有名ですが
彼のゴルフを生で見れなかったことが残念
でしかたありません。
一世代前の方たち（ちょっと失礼ですが）
青木さん、尾崎さん、村上さんたちは
ずいぶん戸田さんに技術的な影響を
受けたらしいです。
今、この時代に戸田さんが現役バリバリで
日本の試合に参戦できていたなら、
ゴルフファンを魅了したことは間違いないと思います。
最近はやたら勘違いしたプロや、
ちょっと優等生を気取りすぎる人たちが
目に付きますが、素行は悪かったけど
ゴルフを心底愛したプロ
きっとファンの心を掴むはずです。
戸田さんは今のゴルフ界を
どうご覧になられているんでしょうか。
まだオレのほうがうまいな、
と思っているに違いありません。
機会があれば、
戸田さんの生涯を覗いてみるのも
おもしろいですよ。
